What To Do After Moving In

Moving into a new home is a lengthy process, and most people don’t feel settled until they have unpacked their bags and boxes. However, the things you do after moving in actually make a bigger impact than unpacking does. As soon as you move in, you should work towards learning how your new home functions and figure out what projects you want to work on first. Here are a few of the most important things you should tackle:

Walkthrough

You should always do a complete walkthrough when your new home is empty, before any furniture, boxes, or bags have been moved inside. You will want to check that all agreed-upon repairs have been made, all outlets, switches, and fixtures are working, and everything that was to be included in the sale is present in the house. If you find an issue that goes against the contract, contact your realtor immediately.

Plan Your Furniture

Rather than rushing to get all your furniture inside, come up with a plan of how you would like each piece to be set up in their respective rooms. It helps to look at the outlets in each room if you will need to plug in lamps or TVs. You will be able to make changes later on, but having an idea of what goes where will make the process much easier.

Fuse Box & Water Valve

Identify the locations of the fuse box and water valve now so you will not have to go searching for them when you really need them. Fuse boxes are typically located in the basement, garage, or storage room and the water valve can usually be found somewhere around the perimeter of your house.

Deep Clean

Right after moving is the best time to deep clean your home. Your items may have accumulated dust before you packed them away, and there was probably dirt tracked in from coming in and out during the moving process. You may want to run your plates, bowls, and utensils through the dishwasher, too. If you don’t have the time to clean your entire house, think about hiring professional cleaners.

Change the Locks

It is always a good idea to change the locks on your new home, even if you are not concerned about the previous owner. You never know who may have a key to the house. Re-key all the locks on every door leading between the interior and exterior of your home, and on the windows.

Change Your Address

Don’t forget to set up a change of address with the post office. Let your friends and family that you have moved as well as your bank, loan providers, subscription services, etc. If you have moved to a new state, you will need to contact your DMV for a new driver’s license and vehicle registration.
