Packing for Your College Apartment

If you are a college student moving into a new place, you may be wondering what you need to pack. But the real question is how do you pack? There is only so much room for all your belongings, especially if you are sharing your new apartment with a roommate. Follow these tips to making packing easier:

Make a List

Start by making a list of the things you really need. If you just grab random items, you may forget things or bring things you don’t actually need. You can categorize your list by room, curating items that you will need for your bedroom, the living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Make sure to communicate with your roommate before packing so you don’t bring duplicates of items you will be sharing, like a coffee maker, area rug, etc.

Leave Out-of-Season Items Behind

If you plan to visit home before winter, leave your bulky items like boots and coats behind. This makes your clothing load much lighter when packing and will give you much more space in your closet. When the seasons change, you can pack up your spring/summer items and switch them out for warm sweaters.

Keep Hanging Clothes on Hangers

Don’t waste time taking your clothes off their hangers, folding them, and packing them in boxes. You will just have to hang them back up again, so keep them on their hangers and load them up by slipping a large trash bag over them, starting at the bottom, and seal it shut over the necks of the hangers. This will keep your clothes protected and make transporting them much easier.

Keep Fragile Items Safe

Don’t transport breakable items without giving them some cushion. You can use packing paper, or save money by using towels and linens to wrap your items up safely. This is a win-win situation because you need those towels and linens to come with you anyway!

Label Your Boxes

Save yourself the trouble of having to search through boxes for certain items that go in certain rooms. Stay organized while packing by sorting boxes by room and placing similar items together. It may take a little extra time when packing up, but you will be thankful you did.

Bring Plenty of Towels

College life can be busy and hectic, so bring plenty of towels that will last until you have time to do laundry again.
