Sanitizing Your Belongings During a Move

While COVID-19 is most commonly transmitted through close contact with people via respiratory droplets, it can also remain for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. When preparing for a move to a Raleigh NC apartment, it is never a bad idea to clean and sanitize your items and surfaces in your home. This will help lower the risk of spreading a viral illness like the coronavirus. Here’s what to do:

Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces

When moving into your new Raleigh NC apartment, make sure to sanitize all high-touch surfaces first. This includes doorknobs, remote controls, toilets, handles, chairs, tables, light switches, phones, tablets/touch screens, staircase railings, and floors. You should also sanitize all moving boxes. After the move is complete, you can begin deep cleaning your home, but start with these high-touch areas. 

Have Cleaning Materials Available

The CDC claims that COVID-19 is an enveloped virus, meaning that its structure is easily compromised by most disinfectants. During your move, keep cleaning products within arms reach, such as Lysol Disinfecting Wipes and Clorox Multi-Surface Cleaner, or find a full list of EPA-registered disinfectants here. Other products to keep nearby include hand soap, hand sanitizer, gloves, masks, and paper towels to wipe down surfaces. 

Leave Doors Open

Since high-touch surfaces are in need of frequent sanitization, it is best to try to avoid touching them as much as you can. Since movers will be coming in and out of your house to bring in your belongings, it is best to leave your front door and other doors, such as bedroom doors open to make it easy to navigate through your home without needing to touch doorknobs. You will likely want the movers to touch as few items and surfaces as possible outside of the boxes they will be carrying inside. 

Wipe Down Boxes

The coronavirus has been found to remain on cardboard for up to 24 hours, and on plastic and steel for up to 72 hours. Wipe down all your moving boxes before opening with disinfecting wipes to help kill any germs that may be sitting on the surfaces. Once all items have been unpacked, remove all cardboard from your home and wash your hands.
